The honest answer to what physiotherapy costs is that it depends, but that is not much help when you are trying to budget. So this guide gives you real numbers. Across Sydney, a physiotherapy session commonly runs about $80 to $150, with the first appointment usually the dearest, a range Sydney locals describe in much the same way (r/sydney discussion). Many clinics near Carlingford and North Kellyville will only tell you their fee if you phone, which makes comparing hard, so below we publish ours in full.
The more useful idea, though, is this: the advertised fee is rarely what you actually pay. Medicare, private health extras, DVA, aged care, NDIS and workers or motor-accident insurance each change the final figure, sometimes to nothing at all. Understanding which pathway fits you matters more than the sticker price, and that is what this page is built around.
What a session costs at Befit Physio
Here are our current standard fees. The first, longer appointment includes a full assessment, which is why it costs a little more than the follow-ups that come after.
| Appointment | Initial consultation | Follow-up consultation |
|---|---|---|
| Physiotherapist | $130 | $125 |
| Principal Physiotherapist | $150 | $140 |
Fees current as at July 2026 and subject to change; additional charges may apply for Sunday, public-holiday, home-visit or after-hours appointments. Always confirm the latest on our payment options and rebates page.
| The number that matters is your out-of-pocket cost Two people can sit in the same appointment and pay very different amounts. One pays the full fee; another pays only a small gap because their private health extras or a Medicare plan covers the rest; a third pays nothing because they are a DVA gold-card holder or covered under aged care, NDIS or an insurance claim. So the real question is not what physio costs, but what it costs you. |
How you pay changes what you pay
There are six common ways people fund physiotherapy in Australia. This table shows who each suits and roughly what you are left paying; the deeper how-to for the main ones is linked in the sections that follow.
| Payment pathway | Who it suits | What you typically pay |
|---|---|---|
| Paying privately | Anyone, no cover or referral needed | The full fee |
| Private health extras | Members with an extras policy that includes physio | Only the gap, claimed on the spot |
| Medicare care plan | People with an eligible chronic condition and a GP plan | A reduced gap, for up to five sessions a year |
| DVA and aged care | DVA gold-card holders and My Aged Care clients | Usually nothing out of pocket |
| NDIS | Participants with physio in their plan | Covered under the plan |
| Insurance claims | Workers compensation and motor-accident (CTP) patients | No upfront cost with an approved claim |
Because so many pathways exist, being registered with the funds and schemes matters. Befit is registered with all health funds, and with icare and SIRA for workers compensation, CTP insurers, the NDIS and DVA, so most people can claim on the spot rather than chase paperwork later.
Medicare: a subsidy for chronic conditions
Medicare does not fund physiotherapy for everyone. It helps a specific group: people with a chronic or complex condition whose GP prepares a chronic condition management plan. Under that plan you can receive a Medicare rebate toward up to five allied health sessions a year, which can include physiotherapy (Services Australia). Physiotherapy is not bulk billed, so you pay a gap, but the subsidy brings the cost down meaningfully. Who qualifies, what the referral involves and how the rebate is paid are covered in our guide to whether physiotherapy is covered by Medicare.
Private health extras: paying only the gap
If your policy includes physiotherapy under extras, you generally pay only the difference between our fee and your fund’s rebate. With our HICAPS terminal that claim happens on the spot, so you walk out having paid just the gap rather than the full fee up front. How much comes back depends on your fund and level of cover, and on any annual limits, which we unpack in our guide to using your private health extras for physio.
When physio costs you little or nothing
Several groups are covered so fully that out-of-pocket cost is rarely the issue:
- DVA gold-card holders and My Aged Care clients are covered for their physiotherapy.
- NDIS participants with physiotherapy in their plan are funded under it.
- Workers compensation and motor-accident (CTP) patients are treated with no upfront payment once a claim number is approved; we deal with the insurer directly.
- Aged pensioners receive a discounted fee.
Why physio can feel expensive, and how to weigh it
A common frustration, aired often in online forums, is that physiotherapy feels dear. It helps to see what the fee actually buys. A session is not just time in a room; it is a trained assessment of why you are in pain, hands-on treatment, and a tailored exercise plan you keep using long after you leave. Judged by outcome, the cost per recovery is often lower than a cheaper path that does not fix the problem. If budget is tight, there are legitimate ways to lower the cost rather than skip care, which we set out in our guide to reducing your physio costs.

Frequently asked questions
Can I get five free physiotherapy sessions in Australia?
Not quite free, but heavily subsidised. If you have an eligible chronic condition and your GP sets up a care plan, Medicare rebates up to five allied health sessions a year, which can include physiotherapy. You still pay a gap, because physiotherapy is not bulk billed. Our Medicare guide explains who qualifies and how to arrange it.
Is the first physiotherapy appointment more expensive?
Usually, yes. The initial consultation is longer and includes a full assessment to work out what is wrong and build your plan, so it costs a little more than the follow-up sessions that come after. At Befit the initial fee is only slightly higher than the follow-up, and both are shown in the table above.
Do I need a GP referral to see a physiotherapist?
Not for standard private appointments; you can book a physiotherapist directly. A referral is only needed for specific funding pathways, such as a Medicare care plan or some insurance claims. So if you are paying privately or through health-fund extras, you can simply book in.
How much will I actually pay with private health extras?
Only the gap, which is our fee minus your fund’s rebate for physiotherapy. The exact amount depends on your fund, your level of cover and any annual limits, and it is claimed instantly through HICAPS. Our private health extras guide shows how to check your rebate before you book.
Does Medicare bulk bill physiotherapy?
No. Medicare subsidises physiotherapy for eligible people through a chronic condition management plan rather than bulk billing it, so a gap remains. There are still several ways to keep your out-of-pocket cost down, which we cover in our guide to reducing physio costs.
